Black Zodiac Signs
The black zodiac is a concept shrouded in mystery until you look at it closely. In this article, we take a look at the individual black zodiac signs as they are found in the enigma.
The zodiac refers to the 12 signs of astrology. These are actually sun signs, and are known as Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. These signs have been used in astrology since the time of the Babylonians to provide guidance for a host of issues. Of course, where there is light, many people assume there must also be night. In many ways, this is why the concept of the black zodiac is mentioned so often.
There is no black zodiac in astrology. Sorry. It is the creation of writers for the film Thirteen Ghosts. There is also a famous poem by the name, but it has nothing to do with zodiac as referenced here. Regardless, the black zodiac in the film referred to 12 deadly ghosts that were being held prisoners in the basement of a ghost hunter. You can read up on the plot in our zodiac section, but let’s get into the black zodiac signs. Each ghost was supposed to be one of the 12 signs. No dates were attached to the signs, but here is the breakdown on each in no particular order.
Juggernaut
The Juggernaut is the biggest and baddest of the ghosts. He’s seven feet tall and the ghost of a serial killer named Breaker Mahoney. He went mad when alive and killed women and police.
Hammer
The Hammer is the ghost of George Markley. He was an African American in the 1890s who was falsely accused of a crime. He refused to leave town. Some people in the town hung and burned his family. He then beat those people to death with his sledgehammer. He was in turn killed by being strung up to a tree. He then had railroad strikes driven through his body with his own sledgehammer. His hand was cut off and replaced by the hammer head. Thus the name.
Jackal
The Jackal is the ghost of a man born in the 1880s names Ryan Kuhn. He was born to a prostitute and killed them. He was put in a psychiatric facility and went mad. He eventually is put in a dark basement with a very tight straightjacket and cage over his head to keep him from attacking anyone.
Great Child and Dire Mother
Two ghosts in one. The Dire Mother was a circus freak because she was only three feet tall. The “tall man” raped her and she gave birth to the Great Child. The great child is huge, topping out at 300 pounds. The Dire Mother is accidently killed by some circus folk. The Great Child goes nuts and kills them. He is eventually killed by a mob for doing it. As ghosts, he protects her and carries an axe to do it.
Pilgrimess
The Pilgrimess is the ghost of a English woman who settled in a town in colonial times. She was found to be a witch and put in stocks. She was denied water and food until she died.
Angry Princess
The Angry Princess is the ghost of Dana Newman. She was beautiful, but didn’t believe it. She undergoes massive plastic surgery to improve her looks. She eventually tries to do it to herself, but disfigures herself and commits suicide by slashing herself repeatedly. Her ghost walks with the blade.
Torn Prince
The Torn Prince is the ghost of Royce Clayton. He was killed in the 1940s in a drag race when his car was sabotaged. An aspiring baseball player, he walks around with a bat and his body is shredded from the car crash.
Withered Lover
The Withered Lover is a unique ghost. She is the wife of Tony Shalhoub’s character. She died in a house fire saving their children. She is the only ghost who is not vengeful or angry.
Bound Woman
Susan LeGrow is the Bound Woman. She was a beautiful cheerleader who seduced men. She left a string of broken hearts. When one boyfriend caught her cheating, he strangled her to death and buried her at he 50 yard line of the football field.
Torso
Jimmie “The Gambler” Gambino is the ghost known as Torso. He gambled on everything. When he failed to pay up on a debt, he was taken for a ride. Given his name, you can imagine what happened to him. He was cut into pieces, wrapped in cellophane and thrown into the ocean. He appears in the movie as a headless torso that moves on his hands.
First Born Son
The First Born Son is the ghost of Billy Michaels. He was a child who loved cowboys. He was in a duel with another child. He had a play gun. The other child had a real bow and arrow. Guess who won? Billy appears with the arrow still in his head.
As you can see, the black zodiac signs are ghastly and mostly bent on vengeance. That being said, they are purely fictional. None of these individuals ever existed and there is no “black zodiac” in astrology…just regular zodiac signs.
