Explanation of Zodiac Signs

Looking for an explanation of zodiac signs? The answer is both simple and complex, both of which we cover in this article.

Any explanation of zodiac signs has to start off with the most basic of questions. What is a zodiac sign? At its core, the zodiac is a system of coordinates for the sky above us. The sky is divided into twelve areas that cover roughly 30 degrees of the sky. The full 360 degrees of the sky is known as the elliptic. The 12 areas divide the night sky along celestial longitude lines. This is believed to have been so since roughly the first millennium B.C. during the times of the Babylonians.

The zodiac signs are representations of these divisions in the elliptic. They correspond to various factors ranging from ruling planets to elements [earth, wind, fire, water] to birthstones and so on. Combined, these factors all are believed to detail certain things about an individual’s characteristics, tendencies, attitudes and future. This is, of course, based on the basic idea that the celestial bodies influence us.

To this end, the 12 zodiac signs are also believed to represent twelve basic personality types. For instance, any explanation of the Leo zodiac sign starts with its symbol – the lion. This then leads to the overall impression that Leos are strong willed and steady, the type of person that will see something through. If you are in a bad spot, the support of a Leo would be very welcomed.

One explanation of zodiac signs that needs to be offered more often has to do with their order of appearance. The signs always start with Aries. It has nothing to do with the fact Aries starts with an “A” and certainly isn’t based on the date as Aries starts in March and ends in April. Instead, it has to do with the fact Aries is the first sign in the elliptical and starts at 0 degrees longitude. It is then followed by the next quadrant, which is Taurus at 30 degrees.

This is obviously just a brief explanation of zodiac signs. Make sure to take a look at each section we have on the individual signs to learn more about them.
